Weekend Breaks In Europe – Amsterdam, An Amazing Place To Stay!
A few weeks ago I decided to take my wife and kids to The Netherlands and visit Amsterdam. And what a great idea it was. This city (I had never been there before) was an incredible experience. It is a monument in itself (although they are doing a lot of work on a new metro line, which makes it a bit messy in the city I must say).
First of all, I took a boat trip in the canals of Amsterdam. My God, this was really beautiful. The tour guide told us about the history of the canals and the many places we passed by. One of those places was the smallest house of Amsterdam, which is something like 2 meters wide (I forgot the exact size), so incredibly small and you hardly believe it when you see it. Also we passed by the flower market, which is actually a floating market. You have to see it to believe it.
Next stop was the Rijksmuseum. This is an incredible museum (although they are doing some renovations right now) and I watched this incredible painting of Dutch Master Rembrandt van Rijn, called The Nightwatch. It is almost overwhelming, that huge a painting it is. This museum has many other great pieces of art and I hope you give it a try when you visit.
After that, me and the rest of the family visited Rembrandtplein and had a drink. This square, although very small, was entertaining with all its terraces and colorful people running around. The square is of course named after famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn.
We ended the day with a quick visit to the strangest place I have ever seen and the kids loved it. It was called “Febo” and you could eat there. However, all the food is stored in a big wall (behind glass) and you have to put some coins in a machine and then you can open little doors and take your food out. We had something really tasty called “Satekroket” (no clue how to pronounce it) which (you wouldn’t believe it) is a mixture of a meat ragout with peanuts. If you ever visit Amsterdam, make sure you eat one. It is really good, even though it seems to be a very strange combination for food.
