Wade Entezar On Hoquiam Baseball Contests
Basketball is one of the strong suits of the Hoquiam High School Athletics department and they gladly proved this in 2004 when they became state champions and won the 2A championship with a deliberate and outstanding 28 wins and no loss record to beat. And proudly with much pomp, Hoquiam City and its very proud residents can lay claim to a whole lot of other sporting conquest throughout its very passionate sports history but this is not the only thing the people of Hoquiam are so stirred about.
In 2006, Hoquiam again showed its athletic prowess by re asserting its wicked mastering of the Aberdeen city football team in a 14 point defeat of the 100 year old rival 20-6 played in the beautiful and historically rich landmark the venerable Hoquiam Olympic Stadium. This surely kept the age old if not ancient rivalry between the two cities that exist side by side alive and kicking for many more years to come.
One of the biggest events for Hoquiam and one of the most anticipated is the Grizzly Alumni Cross Country Invitational run. An event that thousand of participants hope and dream of joining not just because it is one of the most competitive running events if not the largest held in the west coast of Washington, but also the most pleasurable because of the sights and sounds that Hoquiam has to offer not only to the participants of the run but to the countless thousands who come to bear witness to the event and enjoy Hoquiam’s natural beauty.
The great sporting town of Hoquiam does not run out of athletic events for locals and outsiders because it holds other competitions that promote camaraderie and sportsmanship in every man, woman and child, events like the Volleyball tournament and the much awaited action packed Alumni Wrestling tourney held every January. It also holds the internationally renowned Lumberjack competitions during the Logger’s Playday event held every September and is announced through the Logger’s parade which is part of Hoquiam’s logging heritage.
Another event which bears the sweet smell of competition is the annual Food Ball a community effort for both Aberdeen city and Hoquiam to collect donations of food and supplies for their social support programs that aim to provide free food stuff and essential items to the needy and low income families of both communities. This event is much celebrated and participated in by a lot of people from both cities and is viewed as a motivation to continue their rivalry if so to promote welfare and love of neighbor that gives both cities and their residents reason enough to go for the win in claiming who has helped the most, because at the end of this heart warming event everybody goes home as winners in their own right.
The city also became the base for the Western Baseball League’s Grays Harbor Gulls from the year 1995 to 1997. The games they played were held at the Olympic Stadium, which is listed at the National Registry of Historic Places. In place of the baseball team the stadium is now the proud home of the Grays Harbor Bearcats a team under development for the North American Football League or NAFL.
There are many notable Hoquiam High School Events that display the tenacity and love for sport by the Hoquiam residents and their young folk. They have the annual Aberdeen/Hoquiam football game – which is more than 100 years old, played in the equally historic Hoquiam Olympic stadium. The annual Food Ball Drive – collecting for food banks for distribution to poorer families throughout Grays Harbor County, The Hoquiam Cross Country Invite – Biggest distance running event on Washington coast and the Hoquiam Wrestling Invite – largest wrestling tournament on Washington coast, and the Hoquiam Volleyball Invite held every September.
The city has a long record of being winners in a lot of categories here are some of Hoquiam’s pride and glory; 2007 – Girls Wrestling, 2006 – Girls Fast pitch, 2004 – Boys Basketball, 1988 – Boys Wrestling, 1983 – Boys Track & Field, 1980 – Boys Baseball, 1942 – Boys Basketball, 1939 – Boys Basketball.
