Tracing Your Roots Back To Ireland
The Clare Roots Society, invention of Ennis gentleman Larry Brennan, was established in the spring of 2006 as an recreational family history group in Clare. The Society meets once a month in Ennis, and today has more than 100 participants. Any person with an interest in looking up their family tree is more than welcome to sign up.
Several members are knowledgeable genealogists while other people are beginners in the area. Along with local associates, they have got ‘virtual’ members who are living overseas but who follow activities through e-mail, and wish that they will be in Clare. The society functions together with Clare County Library to be able to add to the great fund of genealogy facts currently available.
People who live overseas and wish to take part in the Society’s projects (e.g. transcription projects) may become members by giving their names, addresses as well as email addresses to the Secretary. Their names will be put on the subscriber list to make sure they are kept advised of Society occasions and projects. Right up until or unless they come to be living in Ireland they will be exempt from the yearly Society registration. An annual subscription charge is levied on members that are living in Ireland and thus able to take part in the Society’s activities personally.
County Clare, located on the western coastline of Ireland in the province of Munster suffered significantly from emigration throughout the last 200 years. Between the years 1850 and 1880 around 112,000 people emigrated from Co. Clare. In comparison the existing population stands at just under 90,000.
Emigration has produced a Clare Diaspora that has triggered many people world-wide who are able to trace their ancestry to County Clare. From the Usa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, South Africa and Argentina, many thousands of men and women seek an increased comprehension of the lives of their forefathers, and an awareness of their own personal heritage. This brings a good deal of tourists to the county. Hotels and other lodging properties source much of their bookings from targeting these Irish emigrants.
