THE SLEEPING BEAUTY OF HOQUIAM WA
The early settlers in the past who were looking for a greener pasture were luckier to acquire a piece of land without so much remorse. They take ownership of that piece of land as far as their eyes can see because that was the law before. Nobody can tell and maybe that was what happened to Hoquiam WA when the early settlers came to this place. When this town was born into a little logging town, prosperity came to Hoquiam where many events took place when logging business was on its zenith.
The name Hoquiam means hungry for wood which was named by the native Indians who were the first settlers of this place. The river beside the forest was also named Hoquiam River. Progress came into existence when the white settlers came into the picture. They made fine woods out of those great trees which catered employment to the populace. Logging then became the major industry of Hoquiam.
The abundant forest of Hoquiam became the main source of livelihood for the people. This became their noble profession by giving quality services when it comes to woodworks. Many businessmen poured into this simple little town and established large number of saw mills and lumber concessions. Due to this, many men poured in to work to earn a living including their families.
One of the big capitalists was Robert and Joseph Lytle who had established the Hoquiam Lumber and Shingle Company in 1902. They became the worlds largest cedar shingle manufacturing company in 1906. The following year then added to more employment to the populace when another lumber concession was established namely the Grays Harbor Lumber Company where they became the main supplier of lumber purposely for the railroad projects of the Northern Railroad Company.
One of the most successful men who made it to the top was the Polsons family. They had acquired two sawmills and one shingle mill. They owned 2 grand mansions in the area wherein one of the mansions were preserved as the Polson museum which was considered as a National Registries Historical Place. Other businesses that was owned by the Polsons are 20 logging and construction camps, 100 miles of railroad and a vast gamut of valuable logging equipments producing 300 million feet of logs every year. The family patriarch in the name of Alex Polson made Hoquiam since then. Their expertise in the lumber concessions went further to real estate business.
In 1891, the lumber barons came into an agreement to merge their logging business between the Lytle Brothers and the Polson Brothers Logging Company. After twelve consecutive years, Merrill and Ring Corporation also affiliated with them making a one big powerful logging concession in the name of Polson Logging Company.
This additional development will surely give enormous profit to everybody. To change an almost stagnant waterfront is something profitable that will benefit the place not only the people but will also give as an additional attraction for the tourists and other passers.
New edifices may be developed like malls and restaurants, coffee shops, gaming arcade for the kids and anything that modern technology can offer. These are some of the renovations that must be considered. At the end of the day after attending those festivals in town, the people can proceed to these places to enjoy and talk about the past events they had attended and enjoyed giving more homely ambiance for everybody not only the tourists but also the rest of the populace who also wanted to enjoy after a hard days work or during weekends.
