The Ikon Gallery in Birmingham is a gallery of contemporary art which is located in the building which was once the Oozells Street Board School, Brindleyplace, but it was not always housed so suitably.
The gallery was founded in the year nineteen sixty four by four students of art and Angus Skene. The 4 artists were; Robert Groves, Sylvani Merilion, Jesse Bruton and Robert Groves. Skene had bought a piece of art by Prentice and the two of them talked about the countless problems faced by local artists, including the dire lack of venues and support. The conversation led to the creation of Ikon which was to be a “gallery without walls”.
Angus Skene initially financed the project, which consisted of mobile exhibitions in such varied locations as cinemas and post offices in a motorcycle sidecar, the idea was to increase the accessibility of art to the public. To reduce expenses staffing was by the family, friends and the founding artists who did not charge for their services. Later the Ikon Gallery established itself in a glass kiosk in the Bull Ring shopping centre.
For almost two decades the Ikon Gallery moved from location to location until 1997 when it acquired, with aid from the National Lottery, the present premises, the former Oozells Street Board School. recently the Ikon Gallery has held a number of exhibitions and its continual ability to excel has led it to become surprisingly popular, to such an extent that it opened a second gallery in 2006, Ikon Eastside in Digbeth.
