The Best Caribbean Cruise Spots
In terms of cruising, the biggest hot spots are Miami, Alaska and anywhere in the Caribbean region. Why? Simply, because the warm climate and gorgeous natural scenery is unlike any other place in the world. All the best cruise lines have regular routes to the Caribbean, often starting off in Louisiana or Florida and touring the western group of islands.
There are ships venturing out to the eastern Caribbean islands as well, making sure to stop in the same ports for each trip. And therein lays the problem. Once a traveler has taken the Caribbean cruise route, they are hooked on cruising. They want to go again, to be pampered aboard a ship with everything from fast food to Las Vegas shows; all while being gently carried to a tropical destination. On the other hand, it can sure take the sparkle out of the trip if each port stop is exactly the same as the last cruise.
In 2002 St. Croix, US Virgin Islands ceased being a regular cruise ship stop because of petty crime. Now, as of 2010, St. Croix is back! Disney Cruises were the first to deem the island as safe again, and now all the other big cruise lines are following their example. The port city of Frederiksted recently received a multi-million dollar boost from the US government to update and refresh the lovely colonial ambiance, and now it is charming. The earlier troubles with small crime have been eradicated, making St. Croix a pleasure to visit once again. Plus, since many travelers have not yet heard that St. Croix is safe again, it remains quiet and un-crowded.
Of the duo island nation Trinidad-Tobago, the latter is the ideal destination for the quiet cruiser. Previously there had been a lack of piers able to accommodate the larger cruise ships, but as of 2009 a new cruise port has been constructed. The facility is able to serve Voyager-class ships without the inconvenience of a transfer boat. Aside from the ease of arrival, Tobago is a wonderfully quaint Caribbean spot full of rare and natural wonders. The oldest rainforest in the Western Hemisphere is located on Tobago, along with magical waterfalls and colorful coral reefs. Go snorkelling, lie on the beach, or take a glass-bottomed boat tour – Tobago is well worth the trip!
These are only two of the best Caribbean cruise spots to be re-discovered. Don’t’ forget Costa Maya, Grand Cayman, San Juan and dozens more! Stay tuned for the next article in this series for more islands to discover in the Caribbean region.
