So, What Does the City of Bristol Have To Offer?
The South West of England is home to Bristol, an attractive University City. Bristol attracts more than nine million visitors each year. Bristol is a top 10 place to visit in the UK and tourism is growing at a steady rate. It is easy to access with a great international airport, convenient rail and bus links and close proximity to several of the UK’s largest motorways.
The City is vibrant and fun with an interesting mixture of culture and heritage. Despite being heavily blitzed in the Second World War, which left it with barely any of its original 11th century architecture, the City is still full of character. The old harbour area is full of wonderful maritime heritage, of particular interest is the restored Victorian ocean liner SS Great Britain which is well worth a visit.
The great Victorian engineer Isambard Brunel, played an important role in the design and creation of Bristol’s floating harbour. Its design is essentially a locked gate system which traps and holds water in the central harbour, which allows the boats to remain afloat and avoid the effects of the tide. Brunel also designed Bristol’s world famous Clifton suspension bridge which has become an iconic symbol and an extremely popular landmark to visit. Spanning the Avon Gorge, this beautiful bridge offers wonderful views. The bridge is a remarkable sight at night when it is lit up.
Bristol is a very popular place for a night out, it has a vivacious nightlife scene with a selection of cutting edge designer bars, public houses, nightclubs and great restaurants. Developed in the early 1990′s, was trip-hop. It is a mixture of hip hop and electronica that started in Bristol and is still popular on todays music scene. Banksy, Bristol’s renowned street artist has created a great deal of remarkable graffiti in and around the City and many striking murals in the area have become popular landmarks.
If you enjoy the theatre you are in luck, because Bristol has one of the UK’s top theatres, the Bristol Hippodrome, where major West End and Broadway productions are staged along with world premieres of various shows and musicals.
If you like to shop then head to the new Cabot Circus development. It has over 120 different outlets and there are hundreds more in Broadmead, nearby. If you are looking for something unique you should also check out the popular Gloucester Road area with its independent outlets.
A fun time to visit Bristol is at the end of July when one of the largest free events within the UK is held, The Bristol Harbour Festival. Now in its 40th year, it is Bristol’s largest event which is celebrated with a variety of music, street theatre and markets.
The Balloon Fiesta at Ashton Court is another popular family event which takes place every year in August. The Bristol skies are transformed with a blaze of colourful hot air balloons and the event also provides a wide range of fun activities such as camel racing and traditional fun fairs.
