Party music for Mexico hotels
Mexico is a great place to party, with fabulous food, friendly people and gorgeous beaches to recover on. Full of Latino spirit, it’s essential to have the right soundtrack to accompany all of that tequila on your holiday in Mexico hotels. This compilation might not always be authentically Mexican, but it certainly captures the spirit of the nation’s penchant for a good fiesta.
Tequila
Where better to start than the Champs only hit devoted to the well-loved Mexican spirit tequila? It’s not one to practise your Spanish to – the only word used in the song is ‘tequila’ – but it sounds just as lively as when it was recorded in 1958 and is ideal party fodder.
La Bamba
La Bamba is actually a Mexican folk song, but in 1958 it was taken to new heights by Ritchie Valens, the US pop star who died at the tender age of 17. Combining Latin sounds with rock and roll, the star’s Mexican roots shine through in this song, which is a universal favourite.
Oye Como Va
Carlos Santana is an icon of Mexican music. His smooth Latin guitar music has transcended Mexico’s borders to become a firm favourite worldwide – evidenced in his many collaborations with popular contemporary artists. This cover of Tito Puente’s original stays true to his Mexican roots and is a perfect example of this musician’s talent.
Mexican Hat Dance
The national dance of Mexico may be known as the Mexican Hat Dance but its real name is Jarabe Tapato. The accompanying music is a medley of Mexican folk, which dates back to the 19th century when it was composed by Jess Gonzlez Rubio. Wherever holidaymakers find cheap hotels, a performance of the Mexican Hat Dance won’t be far away.
Bamboleo
Although they sing in Spanish, the Gipsy Kings are in fact from France, but you wouldn’t guess from their music. The band is made up of eight guitarists and their raucous brand of flamenco is much loved in Mexico. This tune from their first album is a version of a Venezuelan folk song called Caballo Viejo.
Livin’ La Vida Loca
This high-octane track was the number that catapulted Ricky Martin to international fame, having already made a name for himself in Mexico. The star is, in fact, from Puerto Rico and his brand of modern Latino vibes is perfect party playlist material.
Guantanmera
Also known as The Girl from Guantanamo, it’s hard to find a version of this song that doesn’t please at least one party-goer. Why? Because this Cuban classic has been recorded by artists ranging from Pete Seeger to the Fugees! The original Cuban Guantanmera is still a great party starter, though.
Mariachi Music
Like tequila, Mariachi music has its origins in the state of Jalisco. But this iconic Mexican music has permeated the country and can be found being performed in almost every city. Hotels in Mexico frequently play host to Mariachi bands so that visitors can get a taste of the tradition, but for the best example at your party you need tracks by the fabulous Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitln.
