Panama And Cinta Costera Coastal Beltway
Beautiful Panama, located at the southern most tip of Central America, has become a highly popular destination due to its economic stability and steady growth. The economic upswing has made available the necessary funding to improve the infrastructure of Panama City. This is needed to alleviate the congestion that plagues the city’s Avenida Balboa.
The city plans on alleviating the congested flow of traffic in the city by building the Coastal Beltway as a mean of bypassing the city. Currently the Avenida Balboa is used daily by over 72,000 motorists. Parking space is also at a premium and so an area of twenty five hectares is going to be created along the Cinta Costera Coastal Beltway.
Due for completion in the month of April 2009, the cost of the Cinta Costera project is estimated at a total of $189 million. The contract work is shared between two companies, the first is the Constructora Norberto Oldebrecht. They will work jointly with another construction company, called the Constructora Urbana SA. The latter will ensure the proper maintenance to the entire project for five years after construction is completed.
Boris Aguilar and Alberto Arosemena are the two architects who work for Alliance Pro City, the company responsible for the design of this extensive infrastructure improvement project. Dredgers had to be used to pump sand directly from the submerged seabed and to use it to at the landfill site. Roughly thirty hectares of land will be reclaimed in the area known as Panama Bay to make the completion of the project possible.
The completed Cinta Costera Coastal Beltway will be seven kilometres in length and will have a 2.6 kilometre section with four lanes. In addition to the new Coastal Belt there will also be a path for pedestrian access, a breakwater, two elevated viaducts and a bike path. The new design will allow for three different access points at regular intervals.
An ampitheatre will be constructed as part of the twenty five hectare car park. The Avenida Balboa will be built parallel to the Coastal Beltway, eventually merging with it. There will be an addition of four lanes added to the original six. The plan calls for six lanes that will direct traffic all the way from Punta Paitilla to San Felipe, with four lanes running from San Felipe towards Punta Paitilla.
The Avenida third de Noviembre bridge will allow access to the new Beltway wit the building of new access points. The next access point will allow access to the Beltway nearer to Casco Viejo and then further along at the bridge that runs along the Israel route by the Matasnillo River.
There is also a clean up project that will be completed along with the building of the Coastal Beltway. Its aim is to improve the efficiency of the water and sewerage systems that service this area of Panama Bay. Once complete traffic will flow more easily and the reduced congestion levels will make it easier to move around the city.
