How To Use Taxis Safely When In A Different Country
Traveling abroad is a wonderful thing to do; bringing us in touch with different sights, sounds, cultures and experiences. When abroad, it is good to use local taxis, as they provide a great way to get us and our luggage safely and securely to the hotel we are staying in. They are also great for getting to places we are not sure of too, though there does need to be a certain amount of caution applied to stay safe.
Research: As well as reading travel guides, it is worth reading up on how taxis work in the chosen destination. This varies considerably in each country and, further than this, from city to city in each country. Look for how they should be hired; is it a question of flagging down or pre-booking?
When first arriving at the airport and traveling to the hotel, it is often a good idea to use the services offered in the terminal. Many airports are well regulated these days, but there are a few touts in far flung destinations. There is likely to be an organized rank, whilst pre-booking services may also be used.
Likewise, when using a hotel, it may be best to use any taxis which are recommended. These are often managed through a contract directly with the hotel, so you will have charges to your room. However, this may not be the most affordable way forward.
If deciding to pick up a ride directly from the street, extra caution is needed. Many taxis will user a meter which ticks over and displays the cost of the trip. However, these can be tampered with so you should ask advice as to how much a trip should cost. Negotiating a price before hand is also a good way of ensuring you do not pay over the odds.
The majority of drivers are regular people simply doing a job of work of course but, sadly, there are those that wish to steal from tourists. As such, sitting behind the driver is always advisable, as is ensuring the passenger doors open from the inside. Under no circumstances should a car with only two doors be used.
It is always nice to try and strike a conversation with your driver, and obviously be polite to them. If you have a good experience, thank them in their own language, and give them a tip. If you have had a particularly good journey, it could be an idea to ask for a card to contact them directly for future trips too.
