Hoquiam River has been stocked with steelhead smolts that have been sourced from hatcheries and the river is also open during the fall season for Salmon fishing. Though the river is truly not a hotspot for both species, you can still catch decent numbers of winter steelheaders and it would be recommended that you secure some locals who are available to serve as guides or get professional fishing guides who provide their services in the area.
The river’s salmon population is managed most especially in the fall season and anyone interested in salmon fishing should refer to the most updated copy of the rules and regulations regarding salmon fishing. Hoquiam River offers both Coho and Chinook species that are definitely good eating.
Salmon can only be taken with single barbless hooks in the fall season only. Such rules are to be followed to the letter with individuals found to be not following such rules being punishable with fines and maybe more serious sanctions. Make it a point that you get a copy or clear with knowledgeable residents the exact rules and regulations regarding salmon fishing in the River Hoquiam.
For those who do not know, salmon are fish that have this amazing behavior when breeding or spawning rather, the fish actually swim back to the same rivers where they were also spawned by their parent fish while they grow and spend most of their adult life in the open ocean. Salmon swim against the current to get to their spawning grounds with some species dying off after completing their cycle of reproduction and beginning the cycle for the new batch of salmon that after a few weeks after hatching will go back to the sea to re start the life cycle of their species.
The Hoquiam waterfront offers fishing adventures also, aside from the other possible water activities that can be done in this marine environment. Fish that can be had in the area are perch, striped sea perch and other fish that inhabit the historical pilings of the piers and various abutments that litter the entire waterfront. Those who are seeking a more challenging species can go after sea-run cutthroats that give more fight but be mindful of the regulations when taking in your catch since only fish that are fourteen inches in length can be taken and a maximum of two fish a day can be taken home. The rest should be catch and release to maintain healthy breeding numbers.
