Historic, Beautiful St Augustine Inns
A variety of St Augustine Inns are located in this historic Florida city. It was founded by Spanish explorer, Pedro Menendez de Aviles on August 28, 1565, the feast day honoring Augustine of Hippo. This town is the oldest continually occupied city and port on the continental United States. The city offers many fascinating attractions.
Spain ceded Florida to the U. S. Government in 1819. It became an official territory of the United States in 1822. Its military government was headed by Andrew Jackson, who would later become a U. S. President. The territory was officially admitted to the union as a state in 1845.
The city is characterized by beautiful Spanish colonial and architectural structures from the 1800s. Saint George Street anchors many of this town’s most historic buildings. Some have been restored, but many are the original structures dating back hundreds of years.
The Avero House, located on St. George Street, is also known as the St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine. It is dedicated to the first waves of Greek emigrants who arrived here area in 1768. The shrine also houses a museum.
The national monument at Fort Matanzas encompasses 100 acres of barrier islands and salt marshes, as well as a Spanish fort dating to 1740. The fort was constructed from a regional shell-stone material known as coquina. The sides are 50 feet long, and it’s guarded by a 30-foot tower.
Fort Mose Historic State Park is where the first free black settlement was located. The Spanish-sponsored asylum for British slaves was officially recognized in 1693. Spain’s condition for granting freedom was conversion to Catholicism and four years of service to the crown.
Near the city’s gate on St. George Street, the oldest wooden school in the country is located. It dates to 1716. Wooden pins, iron spikes, bald cypress and red cedar were used to construct the building.
