Gems of the Peak District – Buxton Town
A busy, historic spa town with fine Victorian and Georgian architecture, Buxton is a deservedly popular town, marking the gateway to the Peak District National Park. Be sure to stroll around The Crescent, taking in the incredible architecture from the 1700s, and The Dome, a grand building that is now part of the University of Derby. Another must-see are the Pavilion Gardens; 23 acres of green open space in the heart of Buxton, featuring an original pump house, and Solomon’s Temple, a Victorian hilltop folly with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Buxton also had a famous Opera House dating from 1903. The lovingly restored Edwardian building has some is the highest Opera House in England. Here audiences are treated to not only opera but also a wide range of events from dance, musicals, plays and comedy.
Probably Buxton’s most famous attraction is it’s production of spring water. Buxton’s mineral water company sources, bottles and sells this Peak District export all over the world. When visiting you can even take a bottle for yourself. Head to St Ann’s well and see the constant flowing of geothermal spring water.
Shopping is also a big attraction in Buxton. The town has an abundance of high street stores and also some more exclusive boutiques and independent shops. Many Crafts, antiques and fashionable clothes can be found here and the town’s compact layout makes shopping a very pleasant experience. Also check out the popular market on Tuesdays and Saturday.
Being so close to the border of the National Park, Buxton rightly earns its nickname as Gateway to the Peak District. The surrounding countryside is an incredible sight – perfect for walks and treks, and all manor of outdoor activities. The nearby limestone cave of Poole’s Cavern is also worth a visit. Buxton makes a perfect choice for those wanting a destination that combines culture, retail therapy, outdoor fun and flora & fauna spotting.
