Family Outings With Your Teenage Kids
Having a busy schedule is never an excuse to miss out on family outings with yours kids. Your children look forward to spending more time with you especially when you are not working, and they treasure those moments when they feel that you shower them will all your attention especially when you take them out and have fun together. Small kids are actually the easiest to please.
Adolescence may be a difficult stage for a child because of the hormonal, physical and psychological changes that can affect their thoughts and behavior. It is also the stage where friends start to have more influence on them, and where your child starts imposing their authority and independence. Contrary to the belief of some parents to back off and give their children more independence in managing their lives, adolescence is a stage where the parents should even be more involved in their activities to continue mentoring them during this difficult period. Family outings are one the activities where you can promote mentoring and maintaining the connectivity.
Plan the outing ahead of time
Planning the excursion ahead of time is crucial to minimize stress over objections, conflict of schedules, priorities, etc… The children need to have a say on whatever event is planned for them and you have to listen carefully with their responses and their reactions like if their objections are legitimate or they are just trying to be difficult in order to get your attention. If there are other relatives who will be joining the outing, it is also important to consider their needs and what type of activities they will enjoy.
Fun activities for families with small kids include:
Camping in the woods – this is a great outdoor activity and a very educational one at that. You can watch the night sky and identify the stars and constellations.
Biking together – this is a great exercise for the whole family.
Vertical wind tunnels – you get to literally fly as high as 30 feet inside the wind tunnel that is powered by giant electric fans.
Jet ski – a water motorcycle that can go on high speed. Just make sure that your child is a good swimmer because they can fall while maneuvering the jet ski.
Ensure the safety of the family
Children can be the most difficult to watch over especially when they become very excited. That is why that outside of planning your outing ahead of time, you can also remind the kids how important it is for them to be careful and not to go anywhere on their own without you watching over them. If you have teenage kids with you, make sure to assign them to watch over a younger sibling.
Family outings are great moments for bonding with your teenage kids. Always find the time to do them as often as you can and be extra sensitive to your children’s needs and interests. Teenagers do yearn for attention and even if they can sometimes drive you crazy with their mood swings and the, “You don’t have to tell me. I know that already” attitude, always involve them in your family activities. Don’t be fooled by their “I don’t care” demeanor. They care a lot about family so don’t throw away the chance to always be there for them.
