Alternative Rural locations to Explore in Spain
Everyone knows that Spain is a favourite with tourists. But that doesn’t mean that you have to head to the same areas as everyone else. If you do a bit of research you can find that Spain is a delight to people that want to get away from the crowds as much as it is a sunbather’s paradise. These are some examples of the delights on offer if you’re willing to explore more than most.
Burgos Province is a lovely location to do a bit of rambling. There’s the great town of Burgos to explore and shop in, but if you head off into the surrounding area you’ll find even more wonders to enjoy. Atapuerca takes you back in time like nowhere else. This town is home to the oldest fossilised remains of humans anywhere in Europe. It has a great exhibition centre, and digs are still ongoing. Nearby Ags is another top little rustic town, with lots of cafs to choose between, and some friendly locals.
Go to the Navarra Region for somewhere that’s got a lot to do, but not in the standard tourist way. It’s been a place of pilgrims for centuries, so you’re likely to find that there’s a warm welcome for travellers. The town of Puenta La Reina is built around a bridge in the Romanesque style. It has rustic streets with loads of shops and restaurants to explore, and plenty of opportunity to chat to the locals too. Even further off the beaten track you’ll find Cirauqi. This is a sleepy town with Roman walls and rolling fields of poppies along the horizon.
Astorga in Leon Province also offers up some historical gems. The Roman walls here are famous, and the Bishop’s Palace is a brilliant mix of innovation and fairytale splendour. For indulging yourself there’s also nowhere better: you’ll find not only cafs but many chocolate shops, and a dedicated chocolate museum.
It really does pay to get out and see more of Spain. The countryside is a absolute gem, and something you shouldn’t miss if you like some peace and tranquillity.
